Nanotechnology and HSE Management Systems

December 2015.

The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Nanotechnology Working Group periodically issues articles on heath and safety aspects of nanomaterials. The latest article can be found in the December issue of the Synergist which is now available online and in print. The article, "Responsible Management: Nanotechnology and HSE Management Systems", focuses on maintaining an effective health, safety, and environment management system (HSEMS) by implementing the "Plan, Do, Check, Act" approach. The Synergist is published by AIHA and focuses on technical information of interest to the industrial hygiene community, as well as other occupational and environmental health and safety professionals.

Colden Senior Consultants Michele Shepard, PhD, MS, CIH, and Paul Webb, MPH, MBA, CIH, CSP, serve as Chair and Vice-Chair respectively on the AIHA Nanotechnology Work Group and shared some thoughts about this article.

Michele Shepard writes: "this article is applicable to anyone who is managing nanomaterials within their organization. Applying a management systems approach can help formalize the process of evaluating the risk of these materials. Although the concepts discussed in this article focus on end users, they also apply to any stage of the advanced materials lifecycle."

Paul Webb added that "adopting a Plan-Do-Check-Act approach helps stakeholders in many ways with the main goal of reducing the risk of harm and liability associated with these materials."
